The Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin was founded in August of 1993 and was originally known as the Texas Acupuncture Institute. Our Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program is rigorous and thorough. While it can be completed in three years and one term, some students choose a four or five year track. The program compares and contrasts the principles, diagnostic methods and procedures of biomedicine and Oriental medicine. We strive to teach our students how to grasp the root of health problems, rather than to treat the branches. Class sizes are limited to provide individual attention to students. We believe the best way to learn a gentle, effective medicine is from gentle, effective teachers and that learning to heal should take place in a healthy environment.

Because our classes are limited in size (ranging from 8 to 28 students), we are able to provide the atmosphere most conducive to achieving our goals. Our concern is that the students understand the philosophies of biomedicinal and Oriental medicine as they develop their intuitive healing skills. We encourage applications only from students who are ready for a demanding educational experience, including an extensive clinical component.

After completing the required first year courses and passing the comprehensive examination, the student may begin treatment of the required 450 patients. Our active student clinic is often full, providing students with the number of patients necessary to complete their treatment requirements. Oriental medicine involves a different approach to learning. The key to mastering it lies, perhaps, in the ability to evolve as an exceptionally competent and compassionate practitioner.
