Irvine Valley College recognizes the student as an individual who has the right to make educational choices based on a clear and sensitive appraisal of skills, needs, and interests. In keeping with this philosophy, the college provides new students with an assessment session during which basic skills are evaluated and students are asked to identify their goals and interests. Students then attend an orientation session and receive assistance from a counselor in selecting first semester classes and planning a program. The primary goal of this process is to increase the extent to which students complete their educational objectives by providing information about their skills and abilities; by identifying support services; and by offering students the opportunity to plan their educational program in consultation with counselors and faculty. The assessment, orientation and advisement components of this program have been designed to satisfy the requirements of the California State Board of Governors legislation governing student access to and successful completion of programs in the community college.
