Can I work and study in UK at the same time?

Students are frequently allowed to work in the UK and sometimes universities/colleges help arrange employment for students before they arrive. Most of the time a student can work 20 hours per week and if the school is out of term full-time jobs are optional.

Remember that relying on a salary in order to cover your expenses is not always a good idea because: getting a job is not always an easy task, work can interfere with your studies, it is difficult to cover all expenses with a part-time job and, simply, you can lose your job. Also remember that visa rules change constantly so make sure you understand all conditions before applying for a job in the UK.

There are rules concerning unpaid/volunteering job as well.

It is not necessary to apply for a particular permission but there are restrictions on the type of work and hours you can work. The UK Border agency is very strict about people working without permission or working overtime; they can take you out of the UK or refuse your immigration application for violating the rules.

There will be a note on your immigration document (passport, ID):
  • Work limited to max 20 hrs per week during term-time.
  • Work limited to max 10 hrs per week during term-time.
  • Able to work as authorized by the Secretary of State.
  • Work as in Tier 4 Rules.
  • Restricted Work. P/T term time. F/T vacations.
  • Restricted work term time.
  • Work prohibited.

In order to get a job you can always get info from your college/university or through newspapers, internet, job agencies, etc. Remember you cannot take a break from studies to work and save up some money in order to continue your studies, the visa provided only works if you are studying.

It is an obligation for an employer to check that foreign students have permission to work before hiring them; you can always show your ID or get a letter from the UK Border Agency, otherwise there is information available on this topic at:

Preventing illegal working - guidance documents for employers

Paying taxes is something to consider, you can check on the UK Taxes Rates to find out whether you have to pay taxes or not, and if so, how much you should pay.

Employers DO have obligations towards employees, no matter where they are from.
